Freddie King Live At The Travis County Jail
Here's some really amazing footage of Freddie King live at the Travis County Jail in Austin, Texas. Filmmaker Ric Sternberg sets the scene.
"Freddie was in Austin to play at the Armadillo World Headquarters. Richard Halpin (Jail Arts & Education Project) got Freddie and his brother Bennie to play for the inmates at the Travis Co. Jail. The prisoners loved it. So did the musicians. I shot it with help from William McLellan & Linda Evans. It was shot with a single tube camera and recorded on a 1/2" reel-reel portapack. It is funky old video but a record of a terrific performance and selfless act by the late great artist, Freddie King."

A Girl That Works In A Bar (MP3)
Ann Clark - A Girl That Works In A Bar (2:52)
A few days ago I posted the B-side of this record, an excellent murder tune called He'll Never Cheat No More and the Drunken Hobo was prompted to ask about the flip side. Here it is, a rather sad tale of a disillusioned booze hound and her job at one of the local watering holes.

A motorist gets his tank filled at a Fort Worth gas station in 1964. You used to get an awful lot for your 26.9 cents a gallon.

He'll Never Cheat No More (Murder MP3)
Ann Clark - He'll Never Cheat No More (2:16)
Country songs about murder inspired by infidelity are quite numerous, and the vast majority of them deal with men exacting vengeance on cheating wives.
Ann Clark's He'll Never Cheat No More gives us the bloody flip side of the coin.
Hear the other side, if you're so inclined.

He Thought He'd Die Laughing (Murder MP3)
Bobby Helms - He Thought He'd Die Laughing (2:34)
Without a doubt, it's a hell of a long way from Jingle Bell rock to a cold-blooded murder song like He Thought He'd Die Laughing. Helms recorded this one in 1967 for the Little Darlin' label in Nashville, propelled by Lloyd Green's jarring steel guitar work. It rose to #46 on the Billboard Country charts before it ran out of steam.
I have a question, though. Can someone with better ears than mine tell me what the song's second line is? Despite having heard this tune about 200 times, I still have no idea what Helms sings immediately after "His mind was numbed with alcohol."
